Red Cedar Incident – Entries 11, 12, 13, and 14

Entry 11: Inside the Tree – Historic Jail – August 19th, 2023 – 7:22 PM

Well… We ran out of ideas quickly. We tried everything we could think of. Murlocke tried sliding between the bars, but they were too close together and Maisel tried karate-chopping them, but hurt her hand. She told me not to record that she sobbed for five minutes and then whimpered softly for another ten, but it seems like a valuable lesson to remember: Don’t karate chop wooden bars.

Murlocke even attempted to trick the angler into thinking we would bring more people to eat if it let us go. Unfortunately, it didn’t take the bait, or it doesn’t understand English.

My stomach growled, reminding me how long we’d been down there. I pushed away the thoughts of what would happen if we didn’t get out soon: How I’d never go to grade 7, I’d never get to travel the world, I’d never… I needed to focus on figuring out how to get out.

There’s one thing I can’t stop thinking about. It seems strange to me that every location we’ve visited is ancient. It’s like this angler was created based on Harrington from 20 or 30 years ago. Maybe it was created (Or born – Who knows how these things are made) back then and has been sitting here in the middle of the forest ever since…

Entry 12: Tree Jail – August 19th, 2023 – 7:26 PM

Hey, uh, Murlocke here. Sasheen got some idea about this pair old criminals who were held here once and began frantically searching the jail cell. She asked Maisel to do the same and told me to record what they were doing in this journal. I’ve, well… I’ve never had the chance to write in the official Neighbourhood Watch log before – Sasheen and Maisel always fight over who gets to do it. I’m not sure what I should be writing.

We’re all still stuck in jail.

Entry 13: Tree Jail – August 19th, 2023 – 7:28 PM

Okay, Sasheen remembered this old story and told me to write it in here: “A long, long, long time ago, maybe 20 years ago, there were these two convicts who were locked up in Harrington’s jail The same jail we’re in now. They were able to climb up through the vent in the roof. The only thing I can’t remember is how they got up to the roof in the first place. Wait, Murlocke, give me a hand. No, you can stop writing, I need a hand with this—”

Entry 14: Inside the Tree – Historic Jail – August 19th, 2023 – 7:28 PM

We finally got free! Murlocke helped me reach the vent by pulling the bunk beds to the center of the room and boosting me up. Once I got out, I found the key in the sheriff’s desk and freed Maisel and Murlocke.

We then had to figure out how to get out of that tree and stop it from trapping anyone else. With no better theory to work with, we agreed that Maisel’s idea that we were inside of an angler was the most likely. That left us with two options:

  1. We find the heart of the angler and destroy it.
  2. Or… We escape and make sure no one else ever enters it.
An angler’s only known weakness is its heart. Should you find yourself in the rather unfortunate position of being inside of an angler, get your bearings, find its heart, and destroy it. You can locate the angler’s heart by __________ – Excerpt from ALFRED’S The Layman’s Field Guide to Monster Hunting (undated)1

Either way, we knew we had to act quickly before the angler devoured our minds.
